State school pupils are not pushed to apply for Oxbridge because teachers don’t think they will get in, or fit in.

More than four in ten teachers said they would not advise the brightest kids to apply, said charity the Sutton Trust.

A fifth of teachers believed only a fraction of students at Oxford and Cambridge universities were from state schools. But the actual figure is almost 60 per cent.
