The Sutton Trust comments on the Education Endowment Foundation’s latest guidance report on effective use of the pupil premium.

Sir Peter Lampl, founder and Chairman of the Sutton Trust, said:

“It is great to see the Secretary of State highlight the Department for Education’s continued commitment to the pupil premium today. The attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their better off peers is a major challenge facing schools and the pupil premium is an important tool for improving attainment and narrowing the gap.

“It is vital that pupil premium funds are spent on the most effective strategies.  The Education Endowment Foundation’s report published today provides crucial guidance for schools on how to spend their funds as effectively as possible. Improving the quality of teaching is key. We know that high quality teaching is the most effective way to improve the attainment of disadvantaged young people.

“We’d also like to see the government consider a premium for disadvantaged pupils in education from ages 16-19 especially given the further education sector is underfunded.”
