Sir Peter Lampl, Founder of the Sutton Trust and Chairman of the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF), has announced the appointment of James Turner as the Trust’s Chief Executive.

James will join the Sutton Trust in the New Year from the EEF, the charity’s sister organisation, where he has been Deputy CEO since 2015. Prior to that he was Director of Programmes and Partnerships at the Trust having previously held roles in the research and policy team.

He succeeds Dr Lee Elliot Major, who, after 12 years at the Sutton Trust, will take up a new position as Professor of Social Mobility at the University of Exeter.

Sir Peter said:

“I am delighted that James will be joining the Trust as our new CEO, building on the terrific work that Lee has done – who we of course wish well.

“James brings extensive experience of our work having been closely involved in the Trust’s policy, research, fundraising and programmes.

“He will be sorely missed by Kevan and his team at the EEF. Over the past three years he has played a crucial role in growing their team and establishing the EEF as a world leader in education research.”

On his appointment, James said:

“Under Peter’s leadership, the Sutton Trust has transformed the lives of tens of thousands of young people and established itself as the UK’s leading foundation for social mobility. I’m thrilled to be taking on this role and look forward to working with Peter and the superb team at the Trust.”
