Forty-five sixth formers will be offered an exciting opportunity to build a glider, a Green car and high-speed hovercraft at the University of Southampton.
The Sutton Trust, an educational foundation dedicated to improving social mobility through education, is funding the four day residential course in engineering for Year 12 students in partnership with the university.
The free programme will introduce the budding engineers to Ship Science, Aeronautics and Astronautics, and Mechanical Engineering. They will benefit from expert teaching by academics at the university and exercise their design skills by building a glider, a Green car and high-speed craft.
The course is a great opportunity for young people to get a taste for Engineering ahead of applications to university, and is aimed at talented students from low and middle income backgrounds who may be the first in their family to attend university.
Applications are currently open and will close on Friday 29th March.
James Turner, Director of Programmes at the Sutton Trust, said:
“This is a fantastic opportunity for bright young people from low and middle income homes to learn more about engineering and to gain an appetite for further study at university. We hope it will pave the way for many of them to apply for undergraduate courses – and to become the engineers of the future.”
Dr Jo Corsi, Outreach Strand leader at the University of Southampton, said:
“We are delighted to be working with the Sutton Trust on this project. The Design Triathlon offers students an excellent introduction to engineering programmes at the University of Southampton, as well as giving fantastic insight into university life.”
Students interested in applying should visit website for more information:https://www.suttontrust.com/summer-schools/design-triathlon/, and follow the link to the Applications page.
