Commenting on the news that Alan Milburn and his colleagues have resigned from the Social Mobility Commission, Sir Peter Lampl, Founder and Chairman of the Sutton Trust, said:

“It is a sad indictment of the prospects for improved social mobility in the current political climate that Alan Milburn and his colleagues have felt the need to resign. The Commission under his leadership has done much to highlight the extent of the problem.

“It is vital that the Prime Minister renews the commitment she gave in her first statement in Downing Street to ensure that life chances are not determined by social background. Social mobility has fallen back and we need to make sure that every young person has the chance to fulfil their potential and get on in life.”

The response was covered by the Financial Times. Dr Lee Elliot Major, Sutton Trust CEO, was interviewed live for TV by BBC News  and Sky News while Director of Research Conor Ryan spoke to Talk Radio and BBC Radio 5 live about the resignation.
