Greg Hurst reports for the Times on the Sutton Trust’s Earning by Degrees report.

Graduates of Oxford and Cambridge earn a first salary £3,300 higher than those who studied at other elite universities and £7,600 higher than students at new universities, a study has found.

Oxbridge students whose own parents did not go to university start work on even higher initial salaries, earning about £1,000 more than peers from affluent families with a history of higher education. The study, published by the Sutton Trust, an education charity, used government data to compare starting salaries of graduates from different universities and courses.

It found that the average starting salary for a graduate of Oxford or Cambridge was £25,600, while that of someone who attended one of the 11 next most selective universities was £22,300. Graduates of new universities began work on average salaries of £18,000.
