Abbie Wightwick reported for the Western Mail and South Wales Echo on the success of Morgan Cronin on our US Programme.

A cab driver’s daughter who is the first in her family to do A-levels has won a place at one of the most prestigious universities in the world.

Maths and physics student Morgan Cronin has an unconditional offer to study at America’s 316-year-old Yale University in Connecticut.

The Hawthorn High School pupil found out about the Ivy League university, whose graduates include Bill and Hillary Clinton, on the internet after getting 11A*s and 3As in her GCSEs.

Morgan, whose father is a taxi driver and whose mother is a full-time parent, was one of just 150 students selected from 1,600 applicants across the UK for a prestigious summer school in the US at either Yale University or the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

And she has now won a place to study there full-time next August, when the US university year starts, and after she finishes her A-level maths, further maths, and physics this summer.

She described the educational programme run by the Sutton Trust last summer as “like being in a movie”.
