Our CEO James Turner responds to new OfS data that there has been a rise in disadvantaged students at selective universities.

“It is certainly encouraging to see an increase in the number of students from the most underrepresented backgrounds entering selective universities this year. However, the figures show that the numbers of students from the most advantaged areas entering these universities is actually increasing at an even greater rate – so the access gap has actually widened.  We certainly can’t be complacent about the continued need for programmes and policies which increase opportunities for young people from poorer homes.

“We know that getting students into university isn’t the whole picture, and we need to look seriously at the support that students are receiving throughout their university experience, particularly with the added challenges of lockdown and remote learning. It is vital that universities create an inclusive and supportive environment for all their students, so it is great that the Office for Students will be working on ensuring that students are well supported to succeed through their studies and beyond.”
