Every summer, students from across the UK fly to Boston, New York City, Philadelphia and for the first time this year, North Carolina, as part of the Sutton Trust’s US Programme, which we run in partnership with the US-UK Fulbright Commission. The programme is designed to introduce high attaining state school students – many of whom will be the first in their family to go to university – to the US higher education system.

This year we waved off more students than ever – 200 to be precise – at Heathrow Airport as they embarked on a jam packed itinerary, joined by team leader’s who took part in the programme lat year. US week residentials give the students a taste of life at an American university, offering a wide range of activities to help students make the right decisions about American higher education. Kitted out with Sutton Trust yellow backpacks, our students explored university campuses, honed their application essay-writing skills, gained expert advice on navigating the university admissions system and met some inspiring Sutton Trust alumni along the way. Not to forget unmissable cultural activities, such as visiting markets, city landmarks and more – see below for some of the highlights!

This is only one part of the programme – when they get back to the UK, the students may decide to apply for part two of the programme and if selected, will receive a full year of support to help them navigate the complicated American admissions process.

Applications for Year 12/S5 students who would like to join next year’s programme will open November 2019. To be notified when applications open, sign up here.
