Lee Elliot Major and Stephen Machin wrote for the Telegraph 10 years after a landmark Sutton Trust social mobility study

Social mobility is too low in Britain. Too many people are stuck from one generation to the next in the same income bracket or social class group. Too much talent goes unfulfilled at great social and economic cost to the nation.

We know this from a seminal study published by the Sutton Trust and produced by researchers at the Centre for Economic Performance at the London School of Economics 10 years ago.

The LSE report put social mobility on the political map and generated vigorous academic debate. The shockwaves from its findings still reverberate to this day. International comparisons revealed that the prospects of climbing the income ladder are worse in Britain (alongside the United States) than in any other developed nation for which we have comparable data.
