UK Summer School , 2000
Rosa Wilkinson
Brand Strategy Director
Rosa took part on our Oxford Summer School programme in 2000 and went on to apply to the University of Cambridge. She...Ricardo took part on the Pathways to Banking and Finance programme in 2023 and is now an Investment Banking Apprentice with Deutsche Bank. He tells us more about his experience on a Sutton Trust programme and how it helped him get where he is today.
Tell us a bit about your background and where you come from
My name is Ricardo and I come from a working-class background in the outskirts of West London. I am originally from Portugal, but I was born here. I attended two non-selective state schools and then found The Sutton Trust, which pulled me towards a career in finance.
What was the highlight of your Sutton Trust programme?
The highlight of my programme was definitely the summer work experience. I felt I had gained many hard and soft skills from this, and having a relevant and prestigious work experience at such a young age made me much more employable. I also met some great people on the program, which allowed me to expand my network with aspiring finance professionals.
What skills did you gain from taking part in the programme?
The work experience touched upon some skills like financial modelling and commercial awareness, which help in my day-to-day career. Also, throughout the program, my communication, leadership and teamwork skills all improved, which I was able to demonstrate in interviews/assessment centres.
What are you doing now and what are your plans for the future?
I am now a degree apprentice on the Deutsche Bank Investment Banking program, and my plans for the future is to really get as much as I can from this program and hopefully progress into a full-time position within the bank. I would also like to complete my CFA qualification and bachelor’s degree, which are a part of the program, and gain a broad skill set across many different divisions.
Please tell us how taking part in your Sutton Trust programme has impacted you?
It made me much more employable to get on this program, provided me with training on the application process and allowed me to gain an insight into the world of work at such a young age.
What would you tell someone who was unsure about applying for a Sutton Trust programme?
I would say apply anyway! Even if you find out finance isn’t for you, the people you meet and skills you gain along the way are really valuable and will help your professional development.
