The number of teachers with an Oxbridge degree teaching in state schools has doubled in the last year, a new survey has revealed.

However, there is still a substantial gap as independent school teachers are three times as likely to hold a degree from either Oxford or Cambridge, a new report by the Sutton Trust shows.

The report, entitled “Teaching by Degrees”, showed there are now nearly 11,000 secondary teachers in British state schools who hold a degree from either Oxford or Cambridge, an increase of 6,000 from less than 5,000 in 2003.
