Gulli Arnason reports for Financial News on bank-sponsored projects, including Sutton Trust’s Pathways to Banking

A detailed report on bank philanthropy released on Friday by BBA, a UK association for the banking sector, reveals that banks across the UK, US and Europe contributed more than GBP1bn to their communities in the twelve months since 2013.

Community projects supported by the banks have helped alleviate poverty and improve education worldwide, according to BBA’s report ‘Good Returns’. Projects that have received donations from banks over the last twelve months include multi-million pound initiatives to tackle avoidable blindness in developing countries such as Pakistan and Bangladesh, as well as programmes that provide funding and resources to improve the education and work prospects of young people in some of the poorest areas of the UK.

Barclays, Deutsche Bank, Lloyds and HSBC banks formed a partnership with the Sutton Trust in 2014, to try and increase access to the banking sector for under-privileged students. Under the programme, young people from low and middle-income backgrounds are given training and support to realise their full potential. A framework of activities has been created to provide students an early start, ongoing support and information on the wide range of careers available in banking.
