The Sutton Trust has conducted several in-depth investigations of private tuition markets. Our Shadow Schooling report is the most comprehensive report on private tuition in the UK, and we have collected primary survey data on tuition for a decade.

Our research has exposed the prevalence of private tuition, and shown that privately-educated children from more affluent families are far more likely to receive private tuition, often to help them gain acceptance at selective schools.

More affluent families are also far more likely to pay for other extracurricular enrichment classes and to have access to significantly more information when choosing secondary schools.

Unequal access to private tuition and extracurricular activities has a negative effect on social mobility, and the Trust suggests changes like a means-tested voucher system for tuition, expanded non-profit tuition programmes, and fairer grammar school admissions tests.
