The Sutton Trust hosted its first annual Post-16 Teachers’ Widening Participation conference on Monday 25th January, 2016 at 20 Cavendish Square, London, W1G 0RN. This conference brought together members of Senior Leadership, Heads of Sixth Form and UCAS coordinators working in challenging state schools across the UK, as well as a number of representatives from twelve leading universities.Participants learnt about the Sutton Trust’s flagship UK Summer Schools programme and how to identify and encourage eligible students in their school to take part. There was also be a CPD accredited session delivered by the Higher Education Access Network, focusing on improving the quality of students’ personal statements and teacher references.
Wes Streeting, Labour MP and Councillor (and former Sutton Trust Summer School participant), joined us as Keynote Speaker on the day. He shared his experience of The Sutton Trust summer schools, how he got to where he is today and the importance of teachers in helping students to aspire.
