The Sutton Trust has surveyed 1,697 primary and secondary school teachers on their perceptions to Oxbridge through the National Foundation for Educational Research Teachers’ Voice Omnibus survey. It found common perceptions amongst teachers about the proportion of state school students at Oxford and Cambridge, amongst other key findings.

Key Findings

  • 43% of state secondary school teachers say they would rarely or never advise their bright pupils to apply to Oxbridge (Oxford or Cambridge).
  • 21% said they always advised their bright pupils to apply to Oxbridge
  • 28% said they usually advised bright pupils to apply to Oxbridge
  • 19% wouldn’t encourage their students to apply to Oxbridge because they thought they were unlikely to be successful in their application
  • 13% wouldn’t encourage their students to apply to Oxbridge because they didn’t think they would be happy there.
