Good teaching is the most important tool for improving the attainment of disadvantaged pupils. The Sutton Trust has an evidence-based approach to promoting the best pedagogical practices. ‘What makes great teaching?’ – a review of over 200 pieces of research to identify elements of teaching with the strongest evidence of improving attainment – is our most widely read report.

In light of a freer appraisal and performance-related pay environment promoted by the Government since 2010, effective monitoring and training strategies to improve teaching quality are crucial. The Trust proposes a series of improvements and a greater entitlement to professional development of improved quality for teachers. We also aim to reveal systemic challenges to good teaching, such as recruitment shortfalls and inequalities in teachers’ qualifications.
