The Sutton Trust regularly conducts analyses of how changes to student funding and loan terms affect disadvantaged students. We have found that average student debt in the UK is higher than in most countries, that retrospective changes to student loan terms adversely affect disadvantaged students most, and that higher education fee rises threaten to discourage the most disadvantaged from pursuing higher education. The recommendations in this section aim to address a clear need for greater safeguarding and promotion of social mobility through student finance and funding policy.
