The pupil premium is a key lever for raising the attainment of disadvantaged pupils by allowing schools to target resources directly to them. However, the data shows we still have much to do to ensure those from poorer families do as well as their classmates, and problems remain with the effective targeting of Pupil Premium funds, particularly in the context of shrinking overall budgets.

The Sutton Trust strongly encourages the development and promotion of rigorous evidence to determine the most effective spending methods for the Pupil Premium. The Sutton Trust-EEF Teaching and Learning Toolkit is an accessible summary of education research, designed to help schools spend their resources – including the pupil premium – effectively.

This section contains polling and research on perceptions of and use of the Pupil Premium.
