The Sutton Trust regularly conducts analyses of the educational and demographic backgrounds of leading figures in top professions, and the impact of entrants’ backgrounds on success once in graduate employment. The findings reveal significant barriers to accessing leading professions for disadvantaged students, even those who have attended top schools. The privately educated are also significantly over-represented in leading professions.
The Sutton Trust puts forward a series of proposals to break down these barriers. Among them are suggestions for contextualised recruitment strategies, improved career guidance, banning unpaid internships, comprehensive diversity monitoring, and widening participation strategies which include extracurricular activities.
