There should be no place for the “soft bigotry” of low expectations where children from poorer homes are too often ushered towards easier subject, the Education Secretary has said.

Nicky Morgan says plans to move poor pupils away from easier subjects will include the study of Ebacc subjects (like maths and science) at GCSE for every secondary school.

Her comments follow warnings by others that teachers too often fail to push pupils in the classroom.

In a speech to a Sutton Trust and Education Endowment Foundation summit, Mrs Morgan said: “Pupils that lag behind their peers should be encouraged to reach their full potential and to go further than simply ‘catching up’.”

“If we would want our own children to study the core academic subjects, we should extend that opportunity to every child.
