Projects

In its fifteenth anniversary year, the Sutton Trust is looking to expand its project work and is calling for outline proposals of new initiatives to shape its future priorities.

The Trust was founded in 1997 by Sir Peter Lampl and aims to improve social mobility through education. Since inception, it has funded a wide variety of practical projects, research and policy work in the early years, primary and secondary schooling and further and higher education.

The Sutton Trust has funded hundreds of other initiatives since inception, benefiting thousands of non-privileged young people. Successful projects initially supported by the Trust and expanded through government and other philanthropic funding include university summer schools, independent state school partnerships, the Pathways to Law programme, The Children’s University and Into University out-of-school initiatives, as well as innovative higher education access schemes such as the Academic Enrichment Programme, Reach for Excellence and STAR.

We are now interested in hearing about any new projects related to the Trust’s core aim of promoting social mobility through education.  We have a particular interest in initiatives in the following areas:

  • Access to university, particularly the most selective courses and institutions
  • Access to the professions and the most coveted careers
  • Fair school admissions and balanced intakes
  • Opening up high performing schools, including grammar and independent schools
  • Recruiting and retaining the best teachers in the most challenging schools
  • Supporting academically able students
  • Breaking down barriers between the independent and state sectors
  • Parents as first educators and improving school readiness (please see note, below)

We are interested in project ideas with a strategic importance: they might be particularly policy relevant, fill a gap in current provision or be bold and new in content or approach. It is unlikely we would provide simple continuation funding for an existing project.

At the initial stage we would like a simple, brief outline of the project idea, containing some key pieces of information:  a summary of the project’s aims and how they would be delivered; the evidence behind this approach and its likely impact; as well as indicative costs and envisaged scale, if these are available.

Please limit the proposal to one side of A4 and email to info@suttontrust.com

We will be assimilating the project ideas we receive on a periodic basis and contacting those organisations with particularly promising proposals for further discussions.

NOTE: At present most of our early years funding is directed through the Sutton-Impetus Early Years Initiative.  Please see - http://www.impetus.org.uk/what's-special-about-impetus/we-focus-on-poverty/impetus-sutton-early-years-initiative/.  If your project does not fit within the scope of the Initiative, please feel free to submit a proposal in the manner described above.
