Access to higher education

As well as the Sutton Trust Summer Schools the Trust supports a variety of projects focusing on encouraging young people to consider higher education.
University College London/British Museum Ancient Egyptology Summer School
The Sutton Trust supported this subject-themed summer school for the second year in 2005 providing state school students from around England with the chance to study Egyptology and archaeology. Participants had unprecedented access to original source material at the British Museum and the UCL Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology, and benefited from the supervision and guidance of leading experts in their field.
As well as a social programme which included a trip to the Globe Theatre, students took part in a series of lectures, seminars and discussion groups, which developed their ability to question, to analyse critically and to synthesise an argument from a number of sources, and were given a number of opportunities to improve their presentation skills.
Further Education (FE)
The Sutton Trust also funded FE initiatives at Oxford and Cambridge this year. In Oxford our FE Access Officer, Janine Fisher, based at Mansfield College, ran a successful and varied outreach programme with a consortium of colleges, while at Cambridge the FE Access Officer Sarah Barnsley ran two Sutton Trust summer schools for FE students, one, 'Aim Higher', aimed at 16-18 Year olds, and the other 'Go Further', specifically tailored for mature students - a significant but often neglected part of the FE population.
STEP
We are also funding an Easter school at the University of Cambridge. Sixth Term Examination Papers (STEP) are used to assess the potential of A grade A level mathematicians to study mathematics at Cambridge. This Easter school will help academically able students whose schools do not have the resources to offer them the necessary assistance to be successful, where their STEP marks would otherwise have let them down.
