| Applying for funding Funded Projects About us News |
About us![]() The Sutton Trust was founded in 1997 by Sir Peter Lampl with the aim of promoting social mobility through education. It has funded a large number of access projects in early years, school and university settings, and now focuses primarily on research and policy work, as well as a small number of innovative pilot initiatives. The Trust exists to challenge educational inequality and prevent the subsequent waste of talent. It is particularly concerned with breaking the link between educational opportunities and family background, and in realising a system in which talented young people are given the chance to prosper, regardless of their background, the school they happen to attend or the area in which they live. The Sutton Trust is independent and pragmatic, and looks to pursue realistic solutions which have the potential for wider roll out. We develop best practice models based on robust, objective evidence using UK and international sources, and test them rigorously before advocating expansion or policy change. We work closely with the Government and other grant makers to secure nationwide uptake and funding of effective initiatives. Sutton Trust projects developed in this way include Independent State School Partnerships – established by the Sutton Trust in 1997 and now a Government scheme – and university summer schools, pioneered by the Trust and now delivered at the majority of UK universities through a state-funded programme. As disadvantage starts before young people are born and continues through to the workplace, the Trust's interest covers parenting and early years projects; primary and secondary schooling; and access to university and the professions. Since 1998 the Trust and its partners have committed over £22 million to educational access projects and research work in these areas. Read our Ten Year Anniversary booklet here.
